As so often happens when we makes plans, God changed ours. We were waiting and preparing to head to Tacoma last Friday, the day Alison, our birth mom was scheduled to be induced. At one am on Thursday morning, November 8th, we got the call telling us that Alison was in the hospital and in labor. Wow! OK, so instead of packing and shopping later that day as planned, we got up started packing right then. It was hard to not just rush out the door but, laundry still needed to be done and we had to wait till our dear neighbor was awake to let her know we were leaving a day early so she could watch the dogs.
Finally, five hours later, at six am, we were off to Tacoma all packed and ready. At least, we were physically ready. As for mentally and emotionally, I am not sure we were any where near prepared as this long awaited moment came on so suddenly. We finally arrived in Tacoma around noon, already tired but filled with excitement and hope. When Alison finally went into active labor around seven that night, I was anxious and happy and wanted to help her anyway I could.
Alison graciously asked me to be in the delivery room and help by holding one of her legs during labor. We still had no idea if our baby was a boy or girl and the anticipation of finally finding out was felt by all in the room. If you have ever been lucky enough to witness a birth, then you know what an astonishing, and beautiful experience it is. As I watched first our baby's head then body appear, I was in tears. Such a magical moment! Then the nurse announced, "it's a girl!" I thought my heart would explode with love and joy.
I did not think it could get any better, I was wrong. Alison asked me to cut the cord. Such a wonderful, intimate, and special honor. The tears were free flowing by this point. This amazing woman was not only blessing us with a child but also gave me the gift of watching our daughter enter this world and heaped blessing upon blessing by asking me to cut the cord. I am in tears right now just writing about what a profound honor and amazingly beautiful gift I received that day.
Our beautiful daughter, Emma Lea Nichole Rush, entered this world and into our hearts at 9:26pm on Thursday, November 8th, 2012. She weighed in at 8lbs 1oz and was 20 & 1/4 inches long. We were entrusted with her care, blessed as her parents, on Friday, November 9th, 2012. I am still in awe of just how wonderfully perfect she is. Forever grateful to God for Alison and Emma. Alison will always be an important and honored member of our family, without her, we would still be childless, waiting with empty arms. Our arms and hearts are now full to overflowing! This holiday season, we have even more to be thankful for, even more to celebrate, and so much more love to fill our little home.
Praise God for He is ever faithful, working behind the scenes to bless us when we least expect it!
